KDE-4.2

It’s been a long time since I’ve last blogged about KDE, so let me bring some “fresh news”.
The Gentoo KDE team is getting ready to put the 4.2.0 release[1] in the tree as soon as the tarballs are available. The ebuilds are already available in the kde-testing[2] overlay and I’ve added yesterday the mask[3] to the tree.
Anyone wishing to install or upgrade to the 4.2.0 release should read carefully the KDE 4.X guide[4]. We’ll be reviewing this guide carefully to “smooth” the upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.

PS – In case you don’t know how KDE releases work, you won’t be able to upgrade until the tarballs are officially released into the KDE mirrors. So don’t try to use the ebuilds in the overlay if you don’t have access to the tarballs and instead be sure to wait for them to hit the tree.

  1. Hello !

    Thanks for the news.
Can you please tell me if KDE 4.2 will be available as stable in the tree ? (I mean no ~arch keyword needed).

    Thanks.

  2. KDE 4.2 available on the day it is released?!?

Kudos to you and the most excellent Gentoo KDE Team.

Now, will distro watch “report” this or is it too contrary to the “Gentoo is dying” theme?

  3. Temet, not at first. Like all ebuilds, it will be added as ~arch. However, unlike previous versions, 4.2 is a stable candidate, so starting 30 days after it’s added to the tree, we might ask for arches to mark it stable.

Mike, we’ll have to wait and see about distrowatch. I can’t claim any special credit about the 4.2.0 work, though.

  4. Thanks Jorge Manuel for the info.
Humpf, I will have to wait… not sure it’s a good politik… I will certainly install OpenSuse on a partition to try KDE 4.2… and will hope a quick stabilization of KDE 4.2 on my dear Gentoo.

  5. Temet,

The supporting thing you could do is to install Gentoo with KDE4.2 and report all the issues you have if you want to see KDE marked as stable faster šŸ˜‰

  6. Daniel,

I understand your proposition, but I use my Gentoo as stable, my main (lets say 98% of personal use) operating system.
I use it, to use it, not to test.

If I wanted to test, I would run ~arch, which is not the case.
This decision is mainly due to a lack of free time to dedicate to my PC since 3 years. šŸ˜‰

Don’t take it badly, I love my Gentoo… there are simply users that are “just” users, and I’m part of them šŸ˜‰

  7. Kudos to Jorge and everyone of our new KDE team. Thanks for all the work you have done in the last couple of months.
