If you look at ${PORTDIR}/profiles/ChangeLog, you’ll see the following entry:
$ less `portageq portdir`/profiles/ChangeLog 31 Oct 2008; Jorge Manuel B. S. Vicetto <jmbsvicetto@gentoo.org> package.mask: Removed the compiz-fusion-0.7.8 mask now that it has been in the tree for a few days.
Have fun with compiz-fusion 0.7.8 and join us in #gentoo-desktop-effects on freenode or oftc and if you find a bug and report it in our Bugzilla be sure to assign it to the desktop-effects at gentoo dot org team.
compiz 0.7.8 is not in the tree. The latest version available is still 0.6.2-r1:
http://packages.gentoo.org/package/x11-wm/compiz
Trying to do an update today:
# emerge -upD system world
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies… done!
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy “~x11-wm/compiz-0.7.8”.
(dependency required by “x11-libs/libcompizconfig-0.7.8” [ebuild])
Can’t install it unless I grab at least libX11 and compiz ebuilds from the desktop effects overlay.
Why would you unmask the rest of compiz-fusion without the most critical part being in the tree?
Same problem here, ~x11-wm/compiz-0.7.8 is needed by x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.7.8 but is not in the tree.
For people in trouble finding this post, a bug report is open about this issue: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=245050
There is another problem. Check this.

Thank you for your work getting compiz to the tree anyway
I’m very sorry but I failed to notice that the compiz commit script failed to commit compiz and the patches for a few of the ebuilds. It should all be fixed now.
