Dead Space

I got rid of the dead space under the ads today. I had to rework a bunch of elements to make it work correctly but it looks much nicer now. I really hate IE, I’m trying to make the menu degrade more gracefully when you increase the font size or make the window small but IE isn’t cooperating. I have it working in every single browser except that one. Did I mention that I hate IE?

ps. Internet Explorer sucks

  1. Oh my lordy curtis, I feel your pain. I use CSS at work, and our customers use IE. Oh the damn pain :P. PADDING, it can’t get CSS PADDING right, STANDARD CSS padding! I mean wtf :P.

  2. Given the subject matter, though.. is IE compatibility really that important?

I don’t mean to flame or act dumb or anything, I just think that if a person is interested in Gentoo, he or she more than likely would not be using IE.

You are wrong. Many Linux users were not born with Linux preinstalled but come from Windows. How will a Windows user even think of moving to Gentoo if the webpage does not even display correctly in IE ?

Not that Gentoo’s prime target audience are fresh Windows converts, but you just can’t dismiss the fact that 90% of the internet users use IE. Doing so will be a marketing-suicide.

  4. As Ivan said, IE support is mandatory. Lots of our users browse the site from a work computer that only has IE on it. Plus some people just like IE better, I know a few people who run it under WINE as their primary browser. Why they would want to do this I have no clue but the fact remains that they do.

The basic philosophy of the redesign is to support as many browsers as possible starting with text browsers and working up to all the major ones: links/lynx/dillo opera, ie, moz, safari, firefox and konq on all hardware platforms are supported as much as possible.

  5. Yes. Internet Explorer sucks immensely. I guess it’s good that I can forego it since all my web-dev work is just hobbyist stuff. I hope you get it working well! 🙂
