KDE Czech localization needs YOU to do your part

Release of KDE 4.7 is right around the corner and we should provide awesome experience to all czech users. In order to achieve that we need to translate lots and lots of strings.
And as the team is not so huge this is the place where you can get in the game.

First lets take look on the translation statistic.
As you can see We currently have 73% of KDE translated. This is not really bad number, altho we have few abandoned children, that looks for someone willing to take care of them.
Mostly translators are required for the Calligra suite (the new koffice stuff) and Kdevelop magic (where someone with real experience in programming is required).

Did I get your attention?

Awesome, lets take look on the Guide and set up the translating environment.
As a translator you should mostly focus on the kde* things (the KDE SC integrated things) and extragear-* stuff (that are deemed to be somewheat stable) from summit or the brave souls should grab the Calligra/Kdevelop mentioned above.
You should probably not bother yourself with the playground-* as those are usually moving targets where the strings get changed really often and the playground packages don’t have releases so the strings are not used.

But I don’t feel confident enough to fully translate new strings!

Not a problem! In the stats you could see we have around eleven thousand fuzzy strings (that means the text is somewheat translated, but needs review).
Just setup the environment from the link above and focus on the fuzzy strings only (deleting those that are completely wrong is currently pointless as the summit always restores them from the trunk/stable [it considers better to be fuzzy than untranslated and this issue should be addressed in future]).

Well I translated something, what should I do with the files?

Thats really simple, just grab all the files you translated and pack them in to some tarball preserving the directory structure. Eg. if you translated extragear-base/bluedevil.po it should be in the tarball in folder extragear-base/ not in the root folder (it helps us when we apply and include your translations).
Then take the tarball and sent it over the mail to the kde czech mailinglist mentioned in the setup guide above, we will more than gladly include it in to the repository asap.

Hey I translated something and I have collisions during the update. It looks like somebody else translated it in the meantime :(

Well sh*t happens. But to be honest things like this does not happen too often and you could always announce your intention to translate something on the mailinglist for others to know not to touch the file.
Subversion also provide some tools to manage merge collisions, so you can merge your translation in and maybe not loose all strings.

I have more questions, how come you did’t answer them here?

Well I am not walking oracle, even if many are convinced about it.
Just drop us mail with your question to the mailinglist or mail me directly.
Rest assured we won’t eat you, your children or any other precious relatives for it. Although some of us are just interested in your adult female relatives for completely different reasons. Also we already decided to use chickens for our dark rituals because they don’t scream so much ;-)

And why the heck did I write this post in english?

I am used to it more than to czech. And since this stuff is aggregated on various planets it is nice to give them english post rather than spam them with czech they do not understand :-)
