Playstation 3!

Some lucky people in Japan got their already, us pitiful European will have to wait a bit more…

Anyway with the release some new toys had appeared already and I already started packaging them =)

Currently my overlay has already ebuilds for the spe-examples, the documentation and some updated kernel sources (arnd sources vanilla for now).

Other useful stuff are the patches to support the Playstation 3 bootloading system (that is quite interesting it itself) and obviously the boot image (provided as iso)

Congratulations to everybody responsible to this timely release, I’m looking forward new surprises (and the rest of the updated toolchain =))

(PS: if somebody with a ps3 is willing to be an early specimen^W ehm, tester for gentoo please contact me and I’ll try to produce a quick test image with the minimal stuff with the tools we have now, edit: some more at http://overlays.gentoo.org/dev/lu_zero )

  1. You’ve got it easy. I’m in the process of starting the Gentoo PS2 project. It’s a bitch but we’re making progress. The latest kernel the PS2 has ever run is 2.4.17. With any luck, mine will be running 2.4.33.3 by the end of the day. (-:

  2. If you want to buy one of this toys check this >>> pricejapan.com (they also have 60 GB version in etc)
I bought Sharp Zaurus c1000 Linux PDA without any problems. Also wondering about development for Cell 🙂

  3. I just picked up my PS3 yesterday and I am ready to install linux on it. I have been a gentoo user for almost 4 years now and I use linux as the only OS on all of my machines. I am hoping to be able to replace my aging living room PC with the PS3 as a gaming console / media PC. I am not too great at coding, but I am quit familiar with gentoo/linux and I would be able to help troubleshoot stuffs.

Let me know what you need and I will see what I can do to help this project out.

    Thanks,
    Matt

  4. I too just got a PS3, and have been a Gentoo user for years.

No other distro has lasted longer than a week on any of my machines since I first installed Gentoo a few years ago, and as FC5 installs on the PS3 as I type, I can’t help but think this probably isn’t going to change just because I’m doing it on a new hardware platform.

So if there’s anything I can do to contribute, even if it’s just testing, let me know!
