You could use app-portage/autounmask for the keywording work.

1.) xf86-video-* is all for 2D stuff (and Xv) and -ati and -radeonhd share the same acceleration code (Alex Deucher ported it from -ati to -radeonhd)
2.) mesa is at the current point measurable slower than fglrx (phoronix did some tests). developers are currently working on features not on performance. Don't expect anything there soon.
3.) Neither KMS nor GEM for radeon willbe merged in 2.6.29. Currently these are Intel only. See http://planet.freedesktop.org/ or http://airlied.livejournal.com/

I remember massunmask script in wiki somewhere, it's a little perl script to do it automatically.

To the terminal-switching problem, you can try add vga=791 or something to your kernel params. If i guess it well, the two resolution must be same (X and FB).
