You should try loading the ubuntu alternate cd:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

It's the checkbox at the bottom of that page. You can install a command line system and build it up from there. Could be nicer then building down from any of the desktop releases.

@Christopher:

Actually, I did download the alternate CD for Xubuntu, and while it does present a text-only installer, it isn't like the Gentoo minimal CD. The only difference between it and the LiveCD is that it requires fewer resources to run. You still end up with the exact same desktop -- and yes, it still requires "building down" to some degree. There doesn't seem to be an option to install only a commandline system.

I agree with you on archlinux (I did an install after messing with my nvraid, but i decided to install a Gentoo from there). You have to search for every feature you want to install. It's faster to create a Gentoo System (even with compiling) than creating an Arch install with all the features I want.

Why didn't you try debian yet, it works great on my 450mhz alix.

Hello. I'm personally looking for a distro for a 700mhz Celeron laptop with 128M RAM and 30gb HD. I currently have Zenwalk 5.0, but it's adherence to 486-compiled binaries as well as it's idiotic default partitioning ( which I was too stupid to change ) has recently made the laptop a total pain to use. So I'm currently looking at Puppy and Gentoo, while also considering just using a recent Slackware, and unselecting unneeded packages.

i used this cd one time (months ago), so i am not sure, but i think you can install a commandline system or the standard desktop (like KDE,GNOME,Xcfe) from ubuntu
