Inaugural post

February 12th, 2009

Welcome to the Gentoo News weblog!

In the past, Gentoo developers provided weekly and monthly newsletters. However, publishing each issue took an considerable amount of time, resources, and staff. We believe that by moving to an online weblog-based format, we can streamline the process of distributing news items.

With the retirement of the Gentoo Monthly Newsletter's chief editor, Anant Narayanan, GMN editor Joshua Saddler felt it was time to come up with a more versatile format. His solution: a weblog!

A weblog makes it easier to quickly publish articles and content as they are received, instead of letting them accumulate and publishing them once a month (if we're lucky).

By moving to a weblog, we make it easier to search news archives, find items by category, watch specific feeds, and link to posts of interest. Behind-the-scenes, contributors will find it easier to submit items and publish them, as a weblog does not require knowledge of GuideXML.

As you may notice, off to the right is a calendar, a search bar, category listings, the feed setup tool, and our contact information.

While we get used to the new format, you may see some ongoing changes here and there in our content style, layout, and more. In particular, we have to rewrite many of our publishing tools and even create many more new scripts from scratch. Fortunately, with the redesign of the gentoo.org front page, many of our previously time-consuming features have been automated. Now Planet Gentoo summaries and new packages appear on the front page automatically.

However, regular features like Portage package distribution statistics may not show up for some time. In particular, all of our existing scripts and guides are designed to work with and produce GuideXML, not HTML. We could certainly use your help in updating our scripts and writing new tools to increase automation. The less manual coding we have to do, the better! With increased automation, we don't have to sweat the details of nested HTML or lists and so on. We'd love to publish articles after just copying and pasting - we want to bring you the news, not spend hours on the server-side code.

We always appreciate feedback, stories, articles, interviews. If you've got something to say, let us hear it!
