Stage 1&2 is going the way of the dodo?
Truthfully that would be kind of nice. I could really trim down the distcc documentation and the ebuild to remove the stuff that is only present to deal with pre-bootstrap.

Nope, that shouldn't happen, IMHO. We *don't* want to nuke all the references to stage{1,2}, just move them away from Handbook.
It wouldn't be wise to criple existing documentation...

i wouldn't change the docs now, just would be nice to not have to officially support it.

I hope that this doesn't mean that users who have installed from stage1 two years ago are expected to reinstall to be "supported".

No. Gentoo has always been "emerge -uD world" and you're up to date.
From what I gather if you were to perform another install the recommended method would be via stage 3.

What? I thought being able to build from stage1 was a halmark of Gentoo! Don't tell me this functionality is being taken away! A bootstrap.sh and emerge -e system on a modern system takes very little time, I can't understand the demand to eliminate this with the benefits of keeping it.

Ah, I read the article in it's entirety with a slower heart rate, and this decision doesn't seem so drastic.. sorry for the over reaction all ;)
So anyway, there are no benefits from doing stage1/2 compared to stage3?
