The core is just marked as offline for the scheduler, which means it won't be allocated any thread. But the CPU is not "physically" shutdown. On a dual quad-core setup, offlining 6 of the 8 cores reduces consumption by 5-6 W in idle...

Heh, but it actually lets me see that someone I know is using an old ordb.org blacklist, and that's why my email isn't going thru to them.

You're lucky you were able to flash it with a floppy. Sometimes it's Windows or nothing these days. Such was the case on my Sony Vaio.

Any luck in getting info on the PepLink? I am having issues with getting through it (FTP and other ports), but I am not sure if it is the PepLink box, my computer settings inside, or a firewall from where I have been testing it from the outside. (Probably just user error I am betting...)

It would be nice to have something similar with ZeroConf/Avahi, considering that it's easier for users to have avahi present rather than slp :)

put SLP on the router(s). The SLP protocol isn't (easily) routed, but the rest are. There is no reason why the slpd service has to reside on the rsync/distfiles server other than ease.

I like the idea, it's not bad at all.

But as I already said, I'd like to see something traversing above router borders, which isn't going to happen. For example at work we have seperated networks, like .6 for all employees and .7 for all the server boxen.

But the ftp (and thus the mirror carrying the SLP) is in a seperated network (DMZ), which somewhat defeats all the above .. :(

Even if I would put a seperate box (or even a seperate NIC) into the server subnet, only a part of those would see the SLP.

Wow... I've seen them perform live twice. Never thought they'd make a video for that. Seeing that song in concert is pretty epic btw... But man is that one messed up video.

Well, i checked energy consumption after disabling one of cpu's. On my laptop (core 2 duo - t7200) it's bigger than with both cores enabled ;/. I can't also hear a beeping from my machine, which can be heared when cpus (both cores) are idle. It seems, that disabled core is consumig as much energy as it can. So imo disabling one of cpus is just for fun.

you can't disable the first CPU(on my box) I don't think disabling one core will have much effect on power consumption. the best way to find out is it get a wattmeter and have a good testcase(compile something big)

Have you been able to determine if shutting down a core with hotplug reduces power useage? I shut down one of the cores on my Optereon 165, but the core temperature did not drop (this was at idle).
