Just a quick note with a big thanks to Mike Auty 
His ebuild in bug #56881 works fine to get vmware-server working
I’m not completely sure what the problem was at the end, maybe the 2.6.12+ kernel problem or some permissions not right on my system, anyway now it works fine.

Now I just need to start working on getting FreeBSD 6.0 working..
